When you start Windows Media Player, you receive a message similar to:

Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If your computer's date setting has the wrong year, you will experience this behavior.

Use Control Panel / Date and Time to set the proper date.
