JSI Tip 6694. An Event ID 7000 is logged when the ASCTRM service does NOT start?

If you install or remove RealNetworks RealPlayer 8, or you install or remove a program, like Netscape Navigator, that that installs RealPlayer 8, your event log may record:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: DD.MM.YYYY
Time: HH:MM:SS
User: N/A
Computer: <ComputerName>
Description: The ASCTRM service failed to start due to the following error:
The specified driver is invalid.

If the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers\Asctrm.sys is removed but the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ASCTRM registry key exists, you will receive this event when the ASCTRM service fails to start.

To resolve this problem:

1. Copy / Paste the following to a ASCTRM.REG file:

REGEDIT4

\[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ASCTRM\]

2. Merge the ASCTRM.REG file with your registry or run regedit /s ASCTRM.REG.

3. If you were installing, re-install RealPlayer 8.

NOTE: If you were un-installing, an alternate method would be to install and then un-install the application.
