JSI Tip 6347. How do I disable the Shutdown Event Tracter in Windows XP?

I discussed the Shutdown Event Tracker in tip 5359 - How can I record the reason for shutting down a Windows XP computer?

To disable the Shutdown Event Tracker:

1. Use the Registry Editor to navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Reliability.

2. Edit or create a ShutdownReasonUI Value Name, a REG_DWORD data type, and set the data value to 0.

3. Close the Registry Editor.

NOTE: You can use Group Policy to disable the Shutdown Event Tracker:

1. Navigate through Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / System.

2. Double-click Display Shutdown Event Tracker.

3. Select Enabled

4. Select Never from the drop-down list.

5. Press Apply.

6. Press OK.

7. Close the Group Policy snap-in.
