JSI Tip 6145. Downloaded Windows Updates for Windows XP do NOT install?

When you download a Windows Update to Windows XP, the installation process may stop?

If you are using the AOL Web browser interface to download Windows Updates, you may experience this problem as the AOL Web browser does NOT properly communicate with Windows Installer.

There are 3 possible workarounds:

Use Internet Explorer

1. Start AOL to connect to the Internet.

2. Use Internet Explorer to visit http://www.windowsupdate.com.

NOTE: If the downloaded Windows Updates fail to install, use Cleanup and use Internet Explorer.

Cleanup and use Internet Explorer

01. Start Internet Explorer.

02. Use the Tools menu to open Internet Options.

03. Select the General tab.

04. Press Delete Cookies and acknowledge by pressing OK.

05. Press Delete Files and acknowledge by pressing OK.

06. Double-click My Computer.

07. On the Tools menu, press Folder Options.

08. Select the View tab.

09. Clear the Hide protected operating system flies (Recommended) box.

10. Check the Show Hidden files and folders box.

11. Press Apply and OK.

12. Expand the C: drive.

13. Expand the WUTemp folder.

14. Press CTRL+A to select all the files and sub-folders in WUTemp.

15. Press the Delete key and Yes when prompted to confirm the deletion.

16. Start AOL to connect to the Internet.

17. Use Internet Explorer to visit http://www.windowsupdate.com.

18. If the downloaded Windows Update installs successfully, exit this procedure.

19. Repeats steps 01 - 05 and 12 - 15.

20. Expand the C: drive.

21. Expand Program Files.

22. Right-click the WindowsUpdate folder and Rename it OldWindowsUpdate.

23. Restart your computer and delete the OldWindowsUpdate folder.

24. Start AOL to connect to the Internet.

25. Use Internet Explorer to visit http://www.windowsupdate.com.

NOTE: If the downloaded Windows Updates fail to install, use Get a real ISP.
