The Application event log on your Windows 2000 domain controller may contain:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: Computername
Description: Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. Return value (1722).
The System event log may container either of the following:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5788
User: N/A
Computer: ComputerName
Description: Attempt to update HOST Service Principal Names (SPNs) of the computer object in Active Directory failed.
             The updated values were UNAVAILABLE and UNAVAILABLE. The following error occurred: 
             Could not find the domain controller for this domain. 
             Data: 0000: 74 07 00 00 t...

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5789
User: N/A
Computer: ComputerName
Description: Attempt to update DNS Host Name of the computer object in Active Directory failed. 
             The updated value was ComputerName.DomainName. The following error occurred: 
             Could not find the domain controller for this domain.
These errors can be the result of a corrupted computer account for ComputerName.

To fix the problem:

1. Join the computer to a workgroup named WORKGROUP.

2. Restart the computer.

3. Join the computer to the domain.

4. Restart the computer.
