JSI Tip 5561. When you try to install Windows 2000 SP3, you receive 'explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows'?

When you use Windows Explorer to double-click W2KSP3.exe, when the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard completes, you receive:

explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.

This problem will occur if you are running Internet Explorer 5.5 or Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1. Windows 2000 SP3 does NOT properly update the MSHTML.dll library.

To workaround this issue:

1. Close all open Windows before you double-click W2KSP3.exe.

2. Quit Windows Explorer as soon as the Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 Setup Wizard starts.

You can also close all open Windows and start the Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 Setup Wizard from the command line:
