JSI Tip 4632. How do I select a HAL during a Windows XP upgrade or install?

When the message Hit F6 if you need to load a third party SCSI or Raid driver is displayed, press F5.

NOTE: Pressing F7 instead of F5 forces the Non-ACPI PIC HAL (Hal.dll).

NOTE: If you force a HAL, hardware changes will NOT automatically change the HAL.

NOTE: Upgrading from any NT-based OS, will NOT automatically change the HAL.

NOTE: If you press Update Driver while selecting the Computer device in Device Manager, check Install from a list.... and Don't search..., only compatible HALs will be listed.

The following lists the valid selections:

Non-ACPI PIC HAL (Hal.dll) Can Be Used For:

  • Non-ACPI PIC computers


  • Non-ACPI APIC (UP and MP) computers


  • ACPI PIC computers


  • ACPI APIC (UP and MP) computers


Non-ACPI APIC UP HAL (Halapic.dll) Can Be Used For:

  • Non-ACPI APIC (UP) computers


  • ACPI APIC (UP) computers


Non-ACPI APIC MP HAL (Halmps.dll) Can Be Used For:

  • Non-ACPI APIC (MP) computers


  • Non-ACPI APIC (UP) computers


  • ACPI APIC (MP) computers


  • ACPI APIC (UP) computers


ACPI PIC HAL (Halacpi.dll) Can Be Used For:

  • ACPI PIC computers


  • ACPI APIC (UP and MP) computers


ACPI APIC UP HAL (Halaacpi.dll) Can Be Used For:

  • ACPI APIC (UP) computers



ACPI APIC MP HAL (Halmacpi.dll) Can Be Used For:

  • ACPI (MP) computers


  • ACPI (UP) computers


NOTE: On Windows XP, the UP APIC HALs recognize the existence of more than one processor. If you insert a second processor, the the MP files are automatically installed.
