JSI Tip 4206. How do I recover from having installed MS-DOS 6.2x?

When you install MS-DOS 6.2x on your Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP computer, the Windows NT boot sector is erased, preventing you from loading your Windows operating system.

The first step in the recovery is to repair the Windows NT boot sector:

Windows 2000 and Windows XP

1. Start your computer from the CD-ROM or the Setup Boot disks.

2. Perform a Manual repair.

3. Select \[X\] Inspect Boot Sector only.

Windows NT

1. Start your computer with the Setup Boot disks.

2. When prompted for Setup options, choose R for Repair.

3. Select only the Inspect Boot Sector option.

4. If you want to skip mass storage detection, press S.

5. If you DO NOT have an ERD, press ESC to allow Setup to detect your installation.

After the repair

1. Start your Windows operating system.

2. Open a CMD prompt and type:

attrib -r -s -h c:\boot.ini

3. Edit C:\boot.ini and add a last line:

C:\="<Your text>"

where <Your text> is the description you wish to see on the multi-boot menu.
