JSI Tip 4100. Remote Storage restores .exe files when you browse a network share?

If you use Remote Storage to archive the contents of a network share to a remote storage device, clients that use a down-level operating system may experience:

- Delays.
- Previous archived executable files (.exe) may be restored to the share, even though none of the clients requested the program.

Unlike Windows 2000 clients, down-level clients are NOT aware of the offline status of the file. Since .exe files have embedded icons, the GUI tries to retrieve the file to display the icon.

To workaround this feature, use one of the following methods:

1. Don't keep .exe files in a network share that is managed by Remote Storage.

2. Use a non-GUI interface to browse the share. CMD works just fine.

3. Upgrade the clients to Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional.
