JSI Tip 3517. Your Exchange or Outlook client can't change their Windows NT password?

When your Microsoft Exchange Client or Microsoft Outlook user tries to change the Windows NT password, they receive one of the the following messages:

The Windows NT Domain password could not be changed. A required action was not successful due to an unspecified error.

The Windows NT password could not be changed. Please check the information and try again.

This problem will occur if the client is NOT logged onto the domain that the password is change in, or onto a trusted domain, and can not make an RPC connection to the LSA (Local Security Authority).

Clients that use NetWare Client software, Macintosh messaging clients, and AppleTalk and Banyan Vines Clients will have this problem.

To workaround this problem, add the following appropriate Value Name(s), as a REG_DWORD data type, to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA key on the PDC:

Set the data value to 1.

NOTE: Value Name(s) are NOT normally case sensitive, but you must use the exact case for LSA value names.

NOTE: You must restart the PDC for the changes to become effective.
