It may be necessary to take ownership of an object, if you do not all ready have Full Control.
In Windows 2000, Administrators do not automatically have Full Control on a users profile. See tip 3471 » How can I insure that administrators have access to a user's redirected folder?
To take ownership of a file system object:
1. Right-click the object and press Properties.
2. Select the Security tab and press Advanced.
3. Select the Owner tab.
4. In the Change owner to box, select the account that you wish to take ownership and press Apply. You may want to check Replace owner on subcontainer and objects.
NOTE: If you do not have access to this object, you can open a CMD prompt in the context of a user that has Full Control and use CACLS to grant Administrators Full Control. See tip 2548 » The Windows 2000 Runas utility and tip 3215 » How do I schedule a job to run under the SYSTEM context.
To take ownership of a registry key:
1. Open Regedt32 and navigate to and select the registry key.
2. On the Security menu, press Permissions.
3. Press the Advanced button.
4. Select the Owner tab.
5. In the Change owner to box, select the account that you wish to take ownership and press Apply. You may want to check Replace owner on subcontainer and objects.
