JSI Tip 3342. Your SNMP service fails to start and issues Event ID 7024?

Your SNMP service won't start. The Event log contains:

EVENT ID: 7024
Description: The SNMP Service terminated with service specific error 3.

If another application is binding to the same port as the SNMP service, you will experience this problem.

To determine the port that your SNMP service is binding to, use Notepad to open C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\services. The standard is:

snmp              161/udp                           #SNMP
snmptrap          162/udp    snmp-trap              #SNMP trap

To determine if another service is using the port, open a CMD prompt and type:

netstat -an
