JSI Tip 3143. How do I restore or catalog a NTBackup made to a logical disk?

When you use NTBackup to backup files to a logical disk, an abbreviated catalog, that does NOT contain the path or filename of the .bkf file, is created. When you try to restore or build a catalog, you are prompted for the location of the backup file. The restore tab only lists the path of the last .bkf created.

Since the default catalog description at
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\Catalogs only contains the date and time that the media was created, it may be very difficult for you to choose the correct file.

To resolve the problem, change the media label to include the full path and file name when performing a backup to a logical disk.
An example could be <Drive:>\Backups\Wed.bkf - 00-12-11 at 19:00.

NOTE: The catalog name is limited to 50 characters.

NOTE: You can use the techique employed in tip 2265 for obtaining day, date, and time.
