JSI Tip 2786. How do I implement system policies on my local Windows 2000 Professional computer?

You can apply system policies to all users that logon locally to your Windows 2000 Professional computer.

To configure the policy, you will need to copy the following files from a Windows 2000 Server or expand them from the Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM:

 File Name   Copy To
 Poledit.exe   %SystemRoot%
 Common.adm   %SystemRoot%\Inf
 Winnt.adm   %SystemRoot%\Inf
 Poledit.chm   %SystemRoot%\Help

To implement system policies:

1. Run Poledit.exe and modify your policy. See Knowledge Base article Q161334 - Guide To Windows NT 4.0 Profiles and Policies (Part 1 of 6).

2. Save the policy as Ntconfig.pol in %Systemroot%\System32\Repl\Imports\Scripts, use File / Save As.

3. Press File / Open Registry.

4. Local Computer / Network / System Policies Update and check the Remote Update box.

5. Set Update Mode to Manual and type %Systemroot%\System32\Repl\Imports\Scripts\Ntconfig.pol. Press OK.

6. File / Exit.

7. Shutdown and restart.

NOTE: See tip 2492.
