JSI Tip 2711. Windows NT Ping takes a long time when using NetBIOS name?

The Ping utility first quiers DNS for a host name.

If no DNS server is available, the TCP/IP protocol will retry the DNS query. When the DNS query finally fails, Ping uses the NetBIOS name resolution sequence.
