SMS 2.0 clients go through a verify cycle, every 30 days, to insure that they are working properly.
The client verify cycle transfers about 20MB of data to each client, which can significantly impact performance.
Microsoft Product Support Services has a tool, Cliverify.exe, that you can use to configure or turn off the cycle, on each SMS site server.
