JSI Tip 1325. Known IE5 and OE5 issues.

Integration with IE4

Installing IE5 over IE4 will disable the ability to uninstall IE4.

IE 5.0 Setup

You must be an admin to install IE5.

IE 5.0 Setup

Users may receive:

Windows Update Setup: A previous program installation was never completed. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation before running Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations was not empty. Restarting the machine should allow setup to run.

IE 5.0 Setup

Setup will change the default system event sounds for web navigation.

There is no way to prevent this behavior.

IE 5.0 Setup

Frame Spoof patch is only enabled at High security.

Use High or Custom security. See Q167614.

Disk Space requirements

IE5 installs most of it's files to the %SystemRoot% drive.

There is no workaround.

Beta 2 Uninstalls

Java VM does not work properly.

See Q216618 and Q216579 on how to fix this issue.

Integration Shell issues

You must upgrade/install the latest shell update (IE 4.01 SP2) before installing IE5. You cannot install it after IE5 has been installed.

IE4 Compatibility Mode

You must install Compatibility Mode before/during the IE5 installation. You cannot install it after IE5.

Compatibility mode is only available if you are installing over IE4.

Cache refresh will be set to Automatic when upgrading over a previous version of IE.

There is no way to prevent this behavior.

Status bar gets messed up after navigating to an HTTP address from an FTP address.

There is no fix for this problem. The workaround is to close and reopen the browser.

Intelliforms are URL specific. For example:

http://hotmail.com and http://www.hotmail.com are considered 2 different sites

The workaround is to make sure to visit the site using the same URL. See Q220017 - Description of Profile Assistant.

Radio Bar

The Radio Bar does not maintain the persistence setting if you choose Full-Screen Mode.

Radio Bar may not be present on some installations.

You must have the latest version of Media Player installed for the Radio Bar to be available.

FTP Folders

Issue

The FTP folder shell extension does not have the same functionality as most shell extensions.

Dragging to works, dragging from only lets you create a shortcut

Copy To Folder won't allow you to create a directory.

There is no workaround. See Q217888.

FTP UI is not be available when using MS Proxy Server.

There is no workaround.

IE 5.0 Uninstall

Uninstalling IE 5.0 does not restore the IE 4.0 version of LOADWC.EXE.

Re-extract the LOADWC.EXE to %SystemRoot%\System32.

Connectivity Issue

using PPTP, the dial-in server will hang if IE 5.0 is currently loaded.

Close all instances of IE 5.0 before you use PPTP.

OE 5 Uninstall Issues

If you uninstall OE5, any messages receivd in OE5 are not backward migrated to the OE4.x store.

Open OE4.x and select File | Import and select OE5 to import their OE5 messages into OE4.

OE 5 Uninstall Issues

Manually uninstalling OE5 and then reinstalling OE4.x, will not let you import OE5 messages.

The OEMIGLIB.DLL file must be present in the c:\program files\outlook express folder.

Hotmail Integration Issues

You can't manually empty the Deleted Items folder via the OE interface?

Hotmail empties the folder periodically without user intervention. This error will appear when the user attempts to empty the folder, "The server does not support manual deletion of messages. Your `Deleted Items` folder might be emptied manually.

Outlook Express allows you to use multiple email accounts. The Inbox under Hotmail is your Hotmail Inbox. The Inbox under Local Folder is used if you setup "POP" accounts from your ISP

There is no workaround for this.

When syncing the address book with Hotmail, not all of the contacts are uploaded.

Current, address book syncing only works with Latin character sets. Contacts using non-Latin character sets will not be synchronized. There is no workaround for this issue.

Hotmail Integration Issues

Messages received using Hotmail in OE does not contain the full date and time information.

When downloading the list of messages, OE only knows the date of the message, not the detailed date, time and time zone info. Because OE does not know the time zone, the date may appear wrong. To see the full date, adjust for the time zone and open the message.

Identities

Lost the password for yourIdentity?

There is no current fix.

Identities

If you use Identities to access OE and do not Logoff when closing OE, you will not be able to Logon again using a different Identity.

Identity for OE is a global profile. Users must logoff their Identity before shutting down Outlook Express.

Windows Address Book

WAB sync with Hotmail address book isn't working if WAB is shared with OL98.

WAB sync with Hotmail has been disabled when the address book is shared with Outlook 98.
