JSI Tip 10405. You receive 'There was an error launching the File Transfer Manager' on Windows Server 2003?

When you attempt to install or use FTM (Microsoft File Transfer Manager) on Windows Server 2003, you receive:

There was an error launching the File Transfer Manager.
Please try again later or contact your help provider.

NOTE: FTM enables members of Microsoft beta programs, MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network), Microsoft Volume Licensing Services, and other Microsoft programs to transfer files from Microsoft Web sites, using a FTM client.

This behavior will occur if your computer, or network, blocks ActiveX controls, or scripting.

To workaround this behavior, configure Internet Explorer to prompt when you download or run ActiveX controls and configure your Internet security product, or firewall, to allow the download, installation and scripting of signed ActiveX controls:

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Press Internet Options on the Tools menu.

3. Select the Security tab.

4. Select Internet and press Custom Level.

5. In the Security Settings dialog, under ActiveX controls and plug-ins, make the following changes:

Under Download signed ActiveX controls, select Prompt.
Under Download unsigned ActiveX controls, select Prompt.
Under Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins, select Prompt.
Under Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting, select Prompt.
6. Press Yes when prompted to confirm you want to change security settings for the Internet zone.

7. Press OK.

8. Configure your firewall or Internet security product to allow the download, installation and scripting of signed ActiveX controls.
