I get an error running Windows 2000 setup that it cannot detect the version.

A. If you try and run the setup from within Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 you may get the following error:

Windows 2000 Setup could not detect the version of Windows you are currently running. Setup cannot continue.

This is caused by the setup program not being able to detect the current installations product ID. This may be caused by using disk duplication to install but to resolve perform the following:

  1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)
  2. Set the value at to your product ID
    if using Windows NT or
    if using Windows 9x
  3. Close the registry editor
