How do I search for Control Panel functionality in Windows Vista?

A. As with nearly all elements of Vista, Control Panel has a search component. However, it functions in different ways depending on the Control Panel mode you're using. If you're in Control Panel's "Classic mode" and perform a search, the system searches only the names of Control Panel applets; in this case, for example, searching for the term "monitor" will yield no results.

If you instead use Control Panel's "Home mode," the search now uses more knowledge of Control Panel and tagged metadata to obtain far more detailed and accurate results, as this figure shows. Essentially, if you ever want to search for Control Panel functionality, always ensure that you're in Control Panel's "Home view."
