How do I allow PS2 keyboard hot plugging in Windows 2000?

A. If you attach a keyboard via PS/2 port after the Windows 2000 installation has booted the keyboard will not work.

Service Pack 1 introduces a fix to I8042prt.sys (which can also be obtained from Microsoft) which introduces hot-plugging ability assuming the BIOS supports this. To enable perform the following:

  1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)
  2. Move to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters
  3. Double click Headless (or create of type DWORD)
  4. Set to 1
  5. Click OK
  6. Close the registry editor
  7. Restart the machine
