How can I enter a modem initialization string longer than 40 characters?

A. If you're limited to 40 characters when you try to enter a modem initialization string, you can obtain a fix from Microsoft Support (be sure to quote Knowledge Base article Q311941). If you can't wait for this fix, you can edit the registry to work around the problem by performing the following steps:

  1. Start a registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318\}\<modemnumber>.
  3. From the Edit menu, select New - String value.
  4. Enter a name of UserInit, and press Enter.
  5. Double-click the value, enter the required modem initialization string, and click OK.
