Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet reminded us yesterday that mainstream support for Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2003 ends April 14.
As Microsoft notes on its support site, when mainstream support ends for a product it no longer provides no-charge incident support, warranty claims, or design changes and feature requests once mainstream support ends, and only provides non-security hotfix support for those who purchase an extended hotfix agreement.
It's worth noting that XP is still the most popular OS in use by a large margin, with a share of about 64 percent according to Net Applications. Computers with Windows XP are still being sold and the OS can still be purchased on its own.
