Blu-Ray Disc Specifications Approved, Sony Signs on for PS3

The Blu-Ray Disc Founders group recently approved the final specification for the read-only version of the Blu-Ray optical disk, which various companies will tout as a possible next-generation successor to the vastly popular DVD disk. The Blu-Ray disk will allow for storage capacities up to 50GB (compared to 4.7GB for today's DVDs), but it will face stiff competition from HD-DVD, which other companies will push. Blu-Ray has at least one important backer, however: Sony announced recently that it would utilize the format in its next-generation PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console.
