Do you feel as if you don't have enough choices in portable memory card formats? Get ready for yet another format. The Universal Transportable Memory Association (UTMA) is poised to introduce a new format that will be half the physical size of the fairly small Secure Digital (SD) memory format. The new format will be unique because it will put two flash memory chips in one package with processors side by side. The first cards based on the new format will have a 1GB capacity. The capacity of the new format sounds terrific, but unfortunately it's entering an extremely crowded field that includes CompactFlash (CF), Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, MultiMediaCard, SD, Smart Media, and xD-Picture Card. Variety is a good thing, but the availability of too many choices fosters confusion and slows adoption. Agree on a format, please, and stick with it!
