If you are the proud owner of a Surface Pro 2 or Surface 2, you may have experienced an issue where the device will overheat when high resolution screen images (like games) or intensive CPU intensive activities are running.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be an issue with the latest revision of the Surface devices and has suggested a fix will be available through Windows Update soon, though no date has been promised.
In a long thread on the Microsoft Community Forums, Microsoft forum moderator, Steven_B, stated the issue:
Surface devices may dim the screen as thermal temperatures rise from extended, high CPU intensive activities-- like gaming. In some scenarios this does not appear necessary. Our top priority is for customers to have the best possible experience on their Surface device. We’re working on a tuning update that will remove this unnecessary dimming event. You can expect this update in an upcoming Windows Update package. In the meantime allow the Surface to cool down for a minute or so in order to return the screen to previous brightness levels.
The original Surface Pro also runs hot, but apparently not as hot as version 2.
Until the issue is fixed, you might consider investing in The 'Ove' Glove. It is the hot 'Surface' handler, after all.
