SharePoint Security Solutions: A Veritable Slew of SharePoint Safeness

Someone might have left a door unlocked in SharePoint 2010, but it's not these SharePoint vendors. Their mission: SharePoint security. Their means: 3 different routes.

Auditing SharePoint

Monitoring SharePoint activity is crucial for meeting compliance and security requirements, and simply for keeping tabs on what's going on with your SharePoint implementation. LOGbinder SP writes SharePoint audit events to the Windows event log. LOGbinder SP SIEM edition adds alerting, reporting, and secure, long-term archiving of SharePoint audit logs.

"We originally built LOGbinder SP Agent Edition with security teams in mind who already had a log management-SIEM solution in place and just needed to get access to SharePoint audit logs with all the cryptic codes translated and resolved," says Logbinder's Randy Franklin Smith. "But we found that many SharePoint teams often don't have a log management-SIEM solution already in place, yet they still need alerting, reporting, and log archiving.  And that is what our SIEM edition provides."

Automating SharePointSecurity

Native SharePoint security features can be labor-intensive to work with and even then offer inconsistent results. Automating some facets of SharePoint security and making security consistent is the aim of TITUS SharePoint Security. The product is actually three solutions:  Metadata Security for SharePoint; PDF Control for SharePoint; and Document Marking for SharePoint. They can work together as well as alone.

·       Metadata Security for SharePoint lets you protect documents in SharePoint based on their metadata properties. It supports metadata security for both document libraries and lists. It automatically applies security permissions based on the document's metadata properties or content type and lets you assign permissions to individual users or groups based on their Active Directory properties.

·       PDF Control for SharePoint automatically converts documents to PDF format as the documents are added to SharePoint. The PDF conversion takes place transparently in the background, and requires no additional software on the user’s desktop. If the source document changes in the future, the PDF is updated automatically, which ensures that the PDF version is always up to date. One way it integrates with the Metadata product is that you can use the Metadata product to configure who is allowed to see the PDF version.

·       Document Marking for SharePoint automatically adds labels to Office and PDF documents as they are added to a SharePoint library. Labels can be added to the document header, footer, and you can also add a watermark. The label content is configurable by the administrator, and can be based on text strings or derived from the document’s metadata. If a document  gets downloaded, printed, or sent, it can be  watermarked.

TITUS SharePoint security supports SharePoint 2010 and MOSS 2007. Metadata Security supports all document types, including InfoPath forms and lists. Document Marking supports  Office and PDF documents. The products are licensed per user accessing SharePoint, with volume pricing available. Visit the TITUS website for more information.

Controlling SharePoint Environments

ControlPoint 4.2. Every six months Axceler offers a new release of its ControlPoint product. With ControlPoint, Axceler aims to help SharePoint admins better manage permissions, copy sites, analyze SharePoint activity and storage, and gain more control over how their SharePoint environments are configured and deployed.

In ControlPoint 4.2 recently, Axceler enhanced reporting and governance. Security-trimmed, ControlPoint lets admins manage sites while seeing only what SharePoint permissions allow. The solution can identify what sites don't comply with your governance plan and alert you to correct them. When anybody adds sites, an event handler is triggered. The solution lets you manage SharePoint groups and tie them together across site collections and it lets you synchronize permissions. It can also analyze content as to sensitivity, create policies around site deletions, and create comprehensive user reports.

FileLoader for SharePoint 2010. FileLoader lets you move files originally stored in Microsoft Windows folders into SharePoint. It integrates with SharePoint 2010's Managed Metadata service. You can map to content types, use metadata tags, schedule file share migrations, maintain historic and source information and folder structures, or alternatively, transform data during migration. It lets you put in the hands of content owners the decision about what content to migrate, using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet IT populates, locks down to allow only certain cells to be accessed, and which the user then updates about content to be moved and sends back to IT.
