Breaking: Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO

CNN is reporting that Apple CEO Steve Jobs has just resigned as CEO of Apple, and in his resignation letter Jobs recommends current Apple COO Tim Cook as his replacement. CNN has the full text of Jobs’ very brief resignation letter, but here’s a key excerpt:

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

Jobs has been struggling with health-related issues for several years, and took a leave of absence from Apple earlier this year. His last public appearance was at the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June, where he was on-hand to unveil iCloud, Apple’s new cloud-based platform for storing contacts, email, photos, and music.

“I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it,” Jobs said in his resignation letter. “And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role. I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.”
