If NTBackup ocassionally fails, it may that the tape drive did not complete the last operation in the default time allowed. Edit:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\NTBackup\Hardware
Add Value name Drive Settling Time as a type REG_SZ. The default value is 60 (seconds). Try setting it to 120.
